Kihon defense techniques

Kihon-Techiques de DefensesKihon Defense Techniques

Today we will do a Kihon with only defensive techniques with basic positions.

We will do very simple techniques: Gedan barai en Zenkutsu Dachi ; Uchi Uke en Kokutsu Dachi et Soto Uke en Kiba Dachi.
This is a basic sequence but as I already told you, the purpose of the Combinations Kihon is to work well its bases, to work its ranges. This type of basic work is essential in your progress, it allows to establish your foundations to solidify them to evolve and build your knowledge.

We will thus realize this sequence in this order:

  1. Gedan barai en Zenkutsu Dachi,
  2. Uchi Uke en Kokutsu Dachi,
  3. Soto Uke en Kiba Dachi

To learn well we will first start with the techniques of the upper body without moving, that we will repeat several times and then we will only move to feel its balance and the connection with the ground and we will end by bringing together the top and the bottom by doing the whole sequence.

Once the sequences are mastered, we will accelerate the pace to work on explosibility.

Be careful when I say accelerate the pace I do not say to do everything hurriedly. Do not do anything. In fact I want to talk about being faster in the realization of each technique.

I purposely worked explosively only on defensive techniques because I have often seen my students put force on attacking techniques only. For example, if I ask them to do Shuto Uchi Track Gyaku ZukiI often see a slow-motion Shuto followed by a very fast Zuki while the defense technique is as important as the counter-attack.

Well, now is the time to put on your kimono, and follow your course on video.

I am very happy to present this new video for several reasons; First of all because it's been a long time since I did not publish a course in video, but also because it was shot in the new dojo that we just arranged for It's a mix between a dojo and a recording studio, in short, the big class 🙂

See you soon. (Do not forget to warm up before with the advice I give you in the ABCs of warming up , my book to download for free 😉)

I am often asked for examples of Kihon; I will try, now that I have a new dojo :-), to make videos more regularly, but you can also create yourself your Kihon using your Kata for example: You just take a sequence of 3 or 4 techniques from a Kata and you work it like a Kihon to really improve it.

Remember that you must persevere and if you do not succeed in a technique correctly, it does not matter, continue, do not be distracted. The next time think about it and try to perfect yourself. It is necessary to persevere in order to learn from your mistakes to make the movements become an automatism and be the most perfect possible.

  1. Hello Bruno
Thank you for this new kihon always well explained and interesting which allows to perfect the techniques.
The new Dojo is clean though a bit small can be ...
    Good continuation

  2. If you accept my criticism, went well but there is better. The techniques are not finished and the lack of rotations of the hips nor is not ... ..

At the SKIF federation near you, Italy, hip movements are very demanding.

    • Hello Jacques,

Of course I accept the criticism and yes there is better and fortunately because I am still far from the top of our art.

Regarding the rotation of hip, I do not completely agree with you because I think it is not good to exaggerate this rotation. The technique does not start from the hips but from the Hara. The hips just serve as support for the Hara and just have to orient themselves to transfer energy and connect to the ground.

      • Bruno is a bit like saying that you should not exaggerate the rotation of the wheel, it is the nut that counts and that the wheel is just support for the noyeu. All counts and if the hips do not move, the hara does not act. If the wheel does not turn, the nut does not produce energy.

        • Hello Franck,
If I'm fine, if the hips do not turn, there is no possibility to produce energy? So explain to me in which direction your hips turn when you make a Morote Zuki face?

    • In my opinion, if the foot is positioned to allow a sudden thrust of the hip and causes a rotation of the upper limbs, the forces add up. Some Japanese senseis are very stocky and the shoulders are attached to the hips which is not the case for everyone.By against when I'm low back is digging and it gives a feeling of pinching. High position is less problematic. For the arms we tend to contract which reinforces the inertia, we are "strong" but slow.
I was surprised to see a different use of the body in the karate of Me Funakoshi before 1935 found in okinawa karate:
      (first video)
(the arms are used like whips and no pistons)
In my opinion, it is necessary to consider the optimum but especially the long term of practice. For okinawaien I wonder what it means to do like that for 20 years ...
